NEWS RELEASE
NATIONAL TRANSPORTATION WEEK KICKS OFF
WITH LARGE ARRAY OF LOCAL EVENTS NEXT WEEK
Judge Emmett Named Honorary Houston Chairman
Of Event Begun By President Kennedy In 1962
More than 1,500 local transportation professionals will come together next week to commemorate National Transportation Week with a series of events reflecting their commitment to education, community service and the advancement of professional development. The week’s events will culminate with a luncheon of approximately 300 local industry leaders at Brady’s Landing on Thursday, May 20.
Harris County Judge Ed Emmett has been named the honorary local chairman of the local celebration, and Dr. William R. Stockton will be the keynote speaker at Thursday’s luncheon. Judge Emmett, a recognized transportation expert, is the former president and chief operating officer of the National Industrial Transportation League and was named the 2005 “Transportation Person of the Year” by Transportation Clubs International. Stockton is the executive associate director and research engineer at the Texas Transportation Institute and is a visiting assistant professor of civil engineering at Texas A&M University.
A host of military, government and transportation officials – including state Sen. Mike Jackson and state Rep. Ken Legler – are scheduled to attend the Thursday luncheon from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
Industry organizations and supporters have created a local Web site listing the various events, speakers and companies participating in this year’s commemoration. The site is www.ntwhouston.org, and more than a dozen organizations already have listed a host of events.
National Transportation Week is May 16-22. President John F. Kennedy created the commemoration by presidential proclamation in 1962. For more information about local events, please contact NTW Houston Chairman Dennis Tam at 281.298.9700 or by e-mail at dennis.tam@ntwhouston.org.
